Bagel Bird Feeders!
Birds have to eat to; did you know you can use leftover bagels, peanut butter, and a little bird seed to make a fun bird feeder for your garden? We found that out Thursday at Maxfield! It’s really easy to do too!
We also checked up on our garden on Thursday. We have a ton of veggies ready to be picked, prepared, and ate! Lot’s of radishes, lettuce, and a ton of squash. My oh my do we have squash! What is your favorite way to cook squash?
Youth Post: Food Review – Kabob
The kabob is like broccoli on a stick. It is chewy, juicy, sour and crunchy. It has zucchini, onions and tofu on it.

Youth Post: Food Review – Salad
I sampled the salad. It is kind of like spinach and I would describe it as chewy, juicy, sour and crunchy. The ingredients in the salad are lettuce, tomatoes and onions.

Week 7: Picking Squash and Pulling Radishes
Wow! The hot and wet weather has been miserable for us humans, but plants sure do like it. We already have harvest six squash and a ton of radishes. We’re gonna be munching on those next week I bet!
Do you have any awesome radish recipes we can use? A few kids thought they might be good on salads, and lucky for us we have tons of lettuce too.
Week 7: Field Trip to the Hallie Q. Brown Community Center
Last Tuesday, we took our kids someplace very special. The Hallie Q. Brown Community Center has been an important gathering place for our local Selby/Dale Community for nearly four decades! More importantly, they have an awesome playground.
Before we went to the playground, though, we did a little creative work. Remember our veggie super heroes from last week? We used those to make some awesome comic strips. Look out for a few of them in the common days; our veggie super heroes went on some pretty awesome adventures!
We worked on a webquest about healthy eating together. A webquest is an activity were students look for information on websites selected by the teacher before hand. This way, students spend their time using information, not looking for it. You can see our webquest below.
Youth Post: Veggie Adventure – Sprinkles the Cucumber
Sprinkles: Hello! I’m Sprinkles, Cucumber.
Sprinkles: I live on a farm. It looks pretty. If feel hot.
Sprinkles: I like to fly and play because she never did before.
Sprinkles: This is my best veggie friend, Sprinkledinkle.
Sprinkledinkle: Hi! Iam a cucumber.
Sprinkle: When we are together we play together.
Sprinkledinkle: We play because we are friends.
Sprinkle: Sprinkledinkle is a good friend because he is good to people.

Week 6: Trip to Mississippi Market
Under one of the hottest, most humid days in Minnesota history, we decided that it might be a good day to do something special. So we walked a few blocks from the Selby/Dale community room down to the Mississippi for some fair-trade treats!
Buying ice cream isn’t just fun, it’s educational. First, we explained to the kids about what a co-op is. We were impressed by how many of the kids went to Mississippi Market with their families! Then we challenged our youth to make healthy choices in the spirit of Roots and Reading!
Many kids did make some great choices. Our purchases ranged from gluten-free brownies to tofu fudge sicles to yummy (and local!) cantaloupe! Part of healthy living is knowing how to make those inevitably unhealthy treats healthier, and we sure learned that at the Mississippi Market!
Healthier ice cream, learning how to ask questions in a store, and learning about where our food comes from. Fun and learning are the same thing at Roots and Reading!
Week 6: Vegetable Puppets
Last Thursday, when the skies over St. Paul were lower, grayer, and much cooler than they are today, the Roots and Reading crew headed over the the Selby/Dale Community room to make some vegetable puppets!
We’re going to use our veggie puppets in some creative activities this week. Many of our youth were so proud of their workmanship, I think we’re going to have some very interesting veggie puppet shows this week.
We gave our superheroes super powers. Some of our veggie heroes can even swim though lava (without getting cooked!). Others can fly, and some can change form into another veggie. If you were going to be a veggie superhero, what powers would you have? What veggie would you want to be?
