We also checked up on our garden on Thursday. We have a ton of veggies ready to be picked, prepared, and ate! Lot’s of radishes, lettuce, and a ton of squash. My oh my do we have squash! What is your favorite way to cook squash?

First, we smear our bagels in peanut butter to hold the birdseed.

Then we put a little bird seed on our sticky peanut butter bagels.

Finally, we used string to hang our bagels from a tree when we were done.

We love it when siblings get along!

Do you have any awesome radish recipes we can use? A few kids thought they might be good on salads, and lucky for us we have tons of lettuce too.

Before we went to the playground, though, we did a little creative work. Remember our veggie super heroes from last week? We used those to make some awesome comic strips. Look out for a few of them in the common days; our veggie super heroes went on some pretty awesome adventures!

We worked on a webquest about healthy eating together. A webquest is an activity were students look for information on websites selected by the teacher before hand. This way, students spend their time using information, not looking for it. You can see our webquest below.

Ice-cream sandwiches are the best way to cool down on a hot day!

Buying ice cream isn’t just fun, it’s educational. First, we explained to the kids about what a co-op is. We were impressed by how many of the kids went to Mississippi Market with their families! Then we challenged our youth to make healthy choices in the spirit of Roots and Reading!

Many kids did make some great choices. Our purchases ranged from gluten-free brownies to tofu fudge sicles to yummy (and local!) cantaloupe! Part of healthy living is knowing how to make those inevitably unhealthy treats healthier, and we sure learned that at the Mississippi Market!

Vegan ice cream is just as cool as ice cream with milk!

Healthier ice cream, learning how to ask questions in a store, and learning about where our food comes from. Fun and learning are the same thing at Roots and Reading!

We’re going to use our veggie puppets in some creative activities this week. Many of our youth were so proud of their workmanship, I think we’re going to have some very interesting veggie puppet shows this week.

We gave our superheroes super powers. Some of our veggie heroes can even swim though lava (without getting cooked!). Others can fly, and some can change form into another veggie. If you were going to be a veggie superhero, what powers would you have? What veggie would you want to be?

Our veggies have personality!

The event will feature cooking demonstrations by local chefs and CSA farmers, resource tables, samples of local fruits and vegetables, live music, and games for kids.
